Retro Music Snob News: Police, White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Wilco, Confirmed For Bonnaroo 2007.

Pitchfork Reports:
Next June, the Earth's gravitational field will shift ever so slightly northward as tens of thousands of revelers, many of them wandering in a drug-induced haze, converge upon Manchester, Tennessee for Bonnaroo 2007. In between blackouts, these party people are in for quite the treat, as the fest unveiled its initial lineup today.
Among the highlights: the White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Wilco, the Flaming Lips, the Roots, the Decemberists, Spoon, DJ Shadow, the Hold Steady, Hot Chip, Lily Allen, Tortoise, Feist, Girl Talk, Aesop Rock, Annuals, the National, Regina Spektor, the Black Keys, Dr. Dog, the Little Ones, Manu Chao, Charlie Louvin, Gogol Bordello, and Wolfmother.
David Cross, Lewis Black, and Dave Attell will crack wise in a special comedy tent, while other musical acts of note include the recently reunited Police (as you know), Tool, Ween, Fountains of Wayne, Damien Rice, Kings of Leon, Ben Harper, String Cheese Incident, Cold War Kids, Brazilian Girls, Apollo Sunshine, and the Slip.
As previously reported, the sixth annual edition of Bonnaroo sets the prairies of Tennessee ablaze from June 14 through June 17. Tickets go on sale at noon (Eastern) on February 23.

Retro Music Snob News: Pete Doherty Banned From Driving.

NME Reports:

The star was also fined £200 for driving without insurance, £100 for driving without a dricing licence plus £55 costs.

District Judge Jane McIvor warned the singer that he faces jail if he drives without a licence again.

Doherty's defence counsel Sean Curran said he was eligible for a licence, but had not applied for one after passing his driving test.

He said: "Mr Doherty accepts that he was driving with no licence and insurance. He had left the task of getting an insurance policy in the hands on one of his managers, who hadn't done so.

"Doherty admitted two charges of driving without insurance or a licence at Thames Magistrates Court in London.

Two other driving related charges were dropped.

He was arrested in November 2006 by officers who spotted him driving his Jaguar erratically near his east London home, reports the BBC.

Retro Music Snob News: Tapes N Tape's Josh Grier Talks Tunes

AV Club Reports:
Photo: Julia Simon
The shuffler: Josh Grier, guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for Minneapolis indie-rock outfit Tapes 'N Tapes. Recently back from a tour of Japan and Australia, Grier and company are gathering material for the yet-to-be-recorded follow-up to their acclaimed debut, The Loon.

The Strokes, "The Way It Is"
Josh Grier: I really like The Strokes—their first record, then their second one, too. I wasn't sold on their last one initially, but a couple of songs had really good guitar riffs, and the first song was really great. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. With the first two records, it seemed like they always had an objective in mind, and then on the last record, they wanted to just mess around and see what came out. They're a pretty amazing band. I guess we're both guitar-rock. You know, they have a lot of guitar, we have guitar. [Laughs.] It's an integral instrument.

Wilco, "Poor Places"
JG: Ooh, I love this song. My favorite Wilco record. It was the first record of Wilco's that I bought. I went over to Europe, and I got in really early in the morning, and I had to stay up all day to beat the jetlag. So I went out and bought five or six CDs, and I ended up listening to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot probably eight times, and that was what kept me from falling asleep. All day, I was walking around Düsseldorf, Germany, listening to it. It was right after I graduated from college, and I bummed around Europe, and pretty much every time I was in a museum, I would listen to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot on my dirty old CD player. So whenever I hear it, it reminds me of giant museums and good artwork.

Retro Music Snob News: Check Dinosaur Jr. Download For "Almost Ready" From New Album.

Pitchfork Reports:

Ten years after the last Dinosaur Jr. full-length, and almost 20 since the last featuring the original lineup-- how could we not be anticipating Beyond? While the album's press release promises an album "not of nostalgia," album opener "Almost Ready" is totally nostalgic, steeped in early 90s college rock sounds-- which is fitting, since for many of us, the early 90s college sound was Dinosaur Jr.-- and here, that cymbal wash, those spacious drums and noodling, distorted guitar reignite the band's classic spark.

So often when bands reunite for the first time in two decades, new material is soured by an attempt to approximate a sound they can't hope to recapture, but incredibly, "Almost Ready" sounds so vintage, and so prime Dino Jr, it's truly a marvel: Didn't these guys, like, hate each other? "Come on now... I'm almost ready," J Mascis intones in his signature strained wail, as if the last decade never happened at all, like all this time he's just been waiting for us.

Retro Music Snob News: Teenage Fanclub, Members Of The Church, & Saints On Go-Betweens Tribute Album.

Chartattack Reports:

The Go-Betweens will be the subject of a tribute album featuring Teenage Fanclub, Portastatic, Trembling Blue Stars and members of The Church that's scheduled to come out later this year.

Although no official track list has been revealed for Love Goes On! A Tribute To Grant McLennan And The Go-Betweens, Long Beach, California label Rare Victory is putting songs for the compilation on its MySpace page.

The idea for the album was conceived in late November as a way to pay respect to the Australian band following the passing of Go-Betweens member Grant McLennan last May in Brisbane.

"There is no telling, really what to expect with tribute albums," the label wrote in late January. "These past weeks have been euphoric, as we at Rare Victory have seen the months of toil and efforts pay off in concrete terms, the artistry expanding in ways we could only anticipate."

Retro Music Snob News: Soul Sides Vol. 2 Is All Covers.

Harp Reports:

Soul and funk fans, mark May 22 on your calendars: That’s when Zealous Records and Soul-sides.com team up to release Soul Sides Volume Two: The Covers. It comes on the heels of last year’s Volume One, which marshaled a wealth of talent—from Clarence Reid, Donnie Hathaway and Johnny “Guitar” Watson to Weldon Irvine, Ann Sexton and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings—to become one of the 2006’s most talked-about soul collections.

For this installment in the series, compiler Oliver Wang (a well known journalist and DJ, Professor of Sociology at CSU-Long Beach, and Soul-sides.com’s resident blogger) dived into his voluminous archive of rare soul tracks to unearth a 14-song anthology composed, this time, exclusively of cover songs. According to the record label, highlights include Al Green's legendary version of The Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” Sharon Cash's bombastic version of the classic “Fever,” obscure funk group West Coast Revival's interpretation of Dave Mason's iconic “Feelin' Alright,” a heartbreaking rendition of Gil Scott-Heron's “Home is Where The Hatred Is” by Esther Phillips, even Afro-Beat revivalists Antibalas' take on the Latin hit “Che Che Cole.” There’s also a bonus track, “What A Man,” by Laura Lee, the original of which appeared on Soul Sides Volume One.

Retro Music Snob News: Semisonic's Dan Wilson Talks About Grammy Win For Collaboration With Dixie Chicks.

St. Paul, Minn. — A couple of Minnesota musicians fared well at Sunday night's Grammy Awards. Bob Dylan won two awards, and Semisonic front-man Dan Wilson picked up a Grammy along with the Dixie Chicks. Wilson co-wrote several songs on their latest album, including the Song of the Year, "Not Ready To Make Nice."

The song is a not-so-veiled "told you so" to Dixie Chicks critics, who blasted the Texas trio for their open opposition to the Iraq war and to President Bush.

Dan Wilson was nominated for a Grammy for Semisonic's 1999 hit "Closing Time."

MPR's Tom Crann reached Dan Wilson in Los Angeles and asked the songwriter from Minneapolis what it is like to finally win the award.

Retro Music Snob News: Lucinda Williams Wondering If She Will Ever Top "Car Wheels".

AP Reports:

The album "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" is the work that introduced Lucinda Williams to most of her fans.

"Ever since `Car Wheels' I've been struggling with where do I go now? What do I do?" she told The Associated Press. "I was defined by `Car Wheels' and everything I've done since gets compared to `Car Wheels.'

"West," released Tuesday and her third collection of new music since that 1998 landmark, may be the disc to set her free. Produced by Hal Willner, it's a sonic departure with tight writing and experimental song structure. Williams' weathered voice and depressing subject matter sound familiar, but it's miles away from the gravel road.

Frozen by the pressure of following up her signature disc, Williams went nearly five years without writing a thing. She kept touring, playing the same songs over and over.

Retro Music Snob News: Underperforming MTV Networks Planning Layoffs

Contact Reports:

Saying that corporate parent Viacom has lost patience with the underperformance of MTV Networks, the New York Post reported Sunday, citing several unnamed sources, that the company may lay off as many as 500 employees by the end of the week. The Post indicated that morale at the cable unit has collapsed following last summer's firing of Tom Freston as Viacom CEO and that Chairman Sumner Redstone has stepped in to take a more direct hand in running the unit. Today's (Monday) Daily Variety reported that an unnamed Viacom insider had confirmed the layoffs but said that the number is likely to be closer to 250 than 500. The London Financial Times today put the number at 300, adding that some Viacom executives are expecting hundreds more in MTV's international division.

Retro Music Snob News: Apple's In Stereo Robert Schneider Interview.

AV Club Reports:

When Robert Schneider and friends set up a studio in their Denver apartment in the early '90s, there was no predicting that the sloppy group would evolve into The Apples In Stereo, one of the most influential indie bands of the decade. Along with Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples formed the core of Elephant 6, a collective that spread the gospel of psychedelia to a new generation. But after 2002's punky Velocity Of Sound, the Apples faded from view, and Schneider formed the new outfit Ulysses in his adopted Kentucky, and resurrected an old solo project, The Marbles. Now, with new members Bill Doss of OTC on keys and John Dufilho of The Deathray Davies on drums, The Apples have released the majestic New Magnetic Wonder on Elijah Wood's Simian imprint, and contributed to Yoko Ono's new remix album, Yes, I'm A Witch. The effervescent Schneider recently spoke with The A.V. Club about disillusionment, classic rock, and popping up on The Colbert Report during Stephen Colbert's guitar-solo challenge with The Decemberists' Chris Funk.

The A.V. Club: After the relative rawness of Velocity Of Sound, New Magnetic Wonder has a lot of flourishes and interludes, including "Non-Pythagorean Composition I" and "II." What's the story behind them?

Robert Schneider: Right around the time I did the last Marbles record, I invented a scale. I finally generated those tones on a sine-wave generator, and my brother-in-law turned them into a MIDI file that I can play on the keyboard. It's a 12-tone scale similar to all the black and white keys on a piano, but it attaches different notes to them. The higher the octave gets, the closer together the notes get. It's all based on logarithms. I used that scale to write "Non-Pythagorean Composition." I'm not sure if I'm the first person to ever think of this scale, but I'm sure that most people have never heard this sequence of notes, at least not on a rock album.

AVC: Sounds pretty brainy.

RS: What's interesting is, as a music listener, I don't like brainy music as much as I like gut music. I'd take The Velvet Underground over XTC any day. I love XTC, but I love that the Velvets aren't as composed or constructed. What I value more than artfulness is this purity of emotion and soul and humanity. I've always tried to reach for both of them.

Valentines Day MP3 Downloads For The Jilted & Dumped.

RMS Mix Tape For The "Jilted"
Retro Music Snob made a mix tape for the solo people on Valentines Day. We concentrated on the jilted, angry, cynical, jealous, barely hanging on by a thread doormats of the world. There are enough crappy, sap filled love mixes out there already.

Download these tunes, and slap it in your car stereo. You can listen to it on your way to the liquor store to buy smokes, booze, and pixie sticks. After you have made your purchases, turn the cd back on…go to your ex’s house (or someone who looks like your ex), and do a lawn job with your car. That will make you feel better.

Note: these songs will only be up until Valentines Day. If you are discovering one of these bands for the first time…research them…you may like other tunes by them. Go buy some music. Support these artists!

Valentines Day Mix For The Jilted#1
1) Jason Schwartzman: Ethan’s Song (from Slackers) mp3
2) The Prissteens: I’m Devastated mp3

Retro Music Snob News: Robbie Williams Enters Drug Rehab In US.

Gigwise Reports:

Robbie Williams has been admitted into rehab on the day that he celebrates his 33rd birthday. The former Take That star is being treated in the US for his long-standing dependency on prescription drugs. Williams is hardly enjoying the greatest time in his career at the moment – namely, his latest experimental album ‘Rudebox’ has flopped in comparison to his other long-players. 2007 is also the first time in several year that Williams hasn’t been nominated in the Best Male or Best Album categories at his beloved Brit Awards. This juxtaposes the success of the newly reformed Take That who are outselling their former band mate and are favourites to take a Brit Award this Valentines Day. His admittance isn’t the first time Williams has been in rehab. He checked in in the late nineties for his addiction to drugs and alcohol, which spiralled out of control when he left Take That in 1995.

Retro Music Snob News: Tom Waits Almost Landed Gig As The Devil In "Ghost Rider"

PR Reports:
Nicolas Cage's first choice to play evil Mephistopheles in new comic book movie adaptation Ghost Rider was gravel-voiced crooner Tom Waits. The movie star had his heart set on the Downtown Train singer joining him in the new blockbuster, in which he plays a half-man half-skeleton fireball biker hero, until producers suggested his hero Peter Fonda for the part. Easy Rider star Fonda eventually landed the role of the motorbiking villain, and now Cage insists producers cast the part perfectly. The Moonstruck star says, "We talked about who was going to play Mephistopheles and originally I wanted Tom Waits, but the studio decided they wanted to go with Peter.

Retro Music Snob News: Music Icon Ian Mackaye Testifies Against Washington D.C. Age Ban

In a follow up to this article, Washington D.C. music icon Ian Mackaye recently delivered a passionate speech condemning the recently proposed laws to restrict those under 21 from attending clubs.

In the speech, Ian appears both angry and dumbfounded by the arguments for the ban, most of which stem from a stray bullet which killed a teenager. As Punknews.org reported earlier, it remains unclear how the mere presence of a youth caused a loaded weapon to go off.

The speech was part of a seven-hour roundtable discussion hosted by DC Council Member Jim Graham, and Graham's website called the round table a "success" and discussed other aspects of the event on his website.

Retro Music Snob News: Sigur Ros Line Up Gig Against Deforestation Back Home.

Pitchfork Reports:

If you happen over to Álafoss, Iceland anytime soon, check out the nearest grove, because you might just catch the men of Sigur Rós in a compromising position with some trees. And by compromising position, we mean hugging, you guttersnipes. Local authorities are planning to pave this paradise and put up a highway, see, and Sigur Rós are none too happy about it.

The orchestral rock quartet announced via its official website recently that it plans to hold a special concert in Reykjavik to raise funds to appeal the construction of the highway in Álafoss and "divert [it] through a less destructive route." Said gig goes down at Verið in Héðinshúsið on February 18, and tickets go on sale today.

As Sigur drummer Orri Páll Dýrason told Reykjavik's Morgunblaðið newspaper, "the ministry for the environment has stated that an evaluation of environmental impact is not warranted, which is a decision we just don't understand and have already appealed. The highway would also go through a grove of trees, which was planted by the children of the founders of Álafoss wool mill built in 1896. Half these trees have been already removed in the first place. It's such a remarkable place and played a huge role in the establishment of the [nearby] town of Mosfellsbær."

Retro Music Snob News: Clap Your Hand's Team Fires Back At Critic Bob Lefsetz' Comments.

Stereogum Reports:

When industry crank Bob Lefsetz fired off his last chart-blasting missive, he rankled Camp Clap into action. CYHSY manager Nick Stern quickly hit back with the following letter, which FairPlay fan Bob promptly forwarded to his minions.

Hi Bob,
As usual, I'm shocked by your attitude towards Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I'm convinced you haven't listened to their new record, and I'm saddened that the model created with this band isn't given more recognition by the one person who has called for all the changes we've actually put into practice. To call what we're doing "IRRELEVANT" undermines every single email you send out. "There's no buzz here, nobody cares."

Retro Music Snob News: Arcade Fire "Guns Of Brixton" Video Live At Westminster.

Pitchfork Reports:
Ramping up to this week's five-night stint at New York City's Judson Memorial Church-- the band's first shows in the United States promoting their forthcoming Neon Bible LP-- the Arcade Fire have been throwing all kinds of crazy stuff up on the album's official website. Well, in addition to the bizarre infomercials and cryptic lyric sheets, this weekend the band have added some very grainy, very stylized video footage of a live performance of a cover they debuted in London: The Clash favorite "Guns of Brixton".

The video begins shrouded in darkness-- just some scurrying, flashes of light, and crowd noise. Then, the applause and lights up: Surrounded by a massive crowd of fans and showgoers in the lobby of Westminster's St. John's Church, the Arcade Fire give a sparse rendition of the London Calling classic, arranged for strings, plucked guitar, horns, skeletal percussion, and... megaphone!

Retro Music Snob News: Deerhunter's Bradford Cox Interview.

Stylus and LHB Report:

With the release of Cryptograms, Deerhunter’s second proper full-length, and first for Chicago’s Kranky Records, the group has been swept from local band obscurity. Touring stints throughout Europe and the US with the Liars and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, kicked up a media stir that has polarized audiences.

Cox’s striking presence—he suffers from Marfan syndrome, a condition affecting the body’s connective tissue, which also afflicted Abraham Lincoln and Joey Ramone—is the target of many a poisoned pen. This, coupled with a flippant, sometime pretentious-leaning temperament has spurned ridicule for both Cox and the group. A conversation with Cox is passionate and often times wanders off of the topic in a stream-of-consciousness manner that’s reflected in the group’s songs.

There's a distinct evolutionary step that occurs between your two CDs, but it's more than just changing things up from album-to-album. With each new show the group portrays a different phase, placing Deerhunter’s sound in a specific time and place. Can you tell me a little bit about this?

We have A.D.D. It's not a scheme. We are not that calculated in our decisions. I sometimes like to play guitar, which means a louder, less physical performance. Sometimes I don't feel like messing around with a guitar so I just sing, and I guess people are easily freaked out by skinny people because when I do that I just walk around and do my thing. People gawk like they're watching a car wreck. In terms of albums, I just want to make a discography that listens like a schizo mixtape that has the Shirelles followed up by Fennesz followed up by Spin Doctors. I have bigger aspirations for us sonically than being just another indie rock band.

Retro Music Snob News: LCD Soundsystem's Marketing Ploy..."Just Ask The Fans To Buy It." Simple But Clever.

Billboard Reports:

James Murphy is recalling a marketing meeting with executives from Capitol Records. The man behind the dance-punk of LCD Soundsystem -- and one of the founders of New York's DFA Records -- was discussing tactics to boost the first-week sales numbers for his upcoming album. Murphy wasn't sold on what he was hearing.

LCD Soundsystem will release "Sound of Silver" March 20 via DFA/Capitol, and some of the ideas bandied about included a limited-edition print with bonus tracks, or perhaps a DVD to accompany early pressings of the new album. But Murphy offered a simpler, more cost-effective solution: Why not just ask fans to buy it?

"They all laughed at me and said I was retarded," Murphy says. But Capitol soon took to the idea. "He did mention that, and I do think it's a great idea," Capitol product manager Reed Seerman says.

Retro Music Snob News: Billy Bragg Lends Hand On Beach Recovery.

PR Reports:

English folk musician Billy Bragg spent three days combing a beach on his knees after becoming an eco-warrior. The singer took part in the tidy-up project at Chesil beach, Dorset when a container ship beached after being caught in storms in the English Channel late last month (JAN07). Around 100 containers were lost overboard when the vessel was deliberately stranded near the sands to prevent it sinking in deeper water offshore. Bragg says, "I was one of a few local people who volunteered to help - there must have been about 15 of us on the first day. "I woke up to find the beach covered in oiled confectionery, chocolate biscuits, Ferrero Rocher and heart-shaped packets of sweets, possibly Russian, that came in on the high tide.

Retro Music Snob News: Arcade Fire Saying Goodbye To Small Venues?

Toronto Sun and LHB Report:
Photo Ian Barrett
From the moment that its 2004 debut Funeral catapulted Arcade Fire from local club heroes to international indie rock phenoms, the Montreal band has constantly adjusted to the shifting realities imposed by its sudden popularity.

"During the Funeral tour," recalls guitarist/percussionist Will Butler, "it seemed like every week was a transition. We started playing for 50 people. Then it was 100. Then 200, then 400, then 800, then 1,600, then 3,200."

In that sense, the five-night, hometown residency that wrapped up last night at the Ukrainian National Federation, a 650-seat community centre located in the city's downtown, was an arrangement of choice rather than a matter of necessity. Arcade Fire is more than plenty big enough in Montreal – and a lot of other places – to have graduated to larger venues.

Retro Music Snob News: Are The Grammys Obsolete? 4th Quarter Releases Left Out.

East Valley Tribune Reports:

A lot of great music was released in the fourth quarter of 2006. But as usual, none of it is being considered for tonight’s Grammy Awards. As a comprehensive overview of the year that was in music, the Grammys always were a little slow to recognize the best music at the height of its relevance.

The voters at the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences took a wait-and-see attitude toward artists such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, James Brown, Parliament-Funkadelic, Public Enemy and Nirvana and never really caught up.

The Grammys could get away with such oversights when they were the only music awards show. They’re still the biggest, with a national TV audience in the millions, but now their credibility and timeliness continue to erode. As the Internet accelerates the way music is distributed, consumed and evaluated, fans can turn to many credible and far more timely outlets to find the year’s best songs and albums. Increasingly, the Grammys can’t help but be perceived as a relic of a time when MP3 files didn’t exist.

Yet the Grammys roll on, tied to an outdated schedule. Academy voters were allowed to consider music released only from Oct. 1, 2005, to Sept. 30, 2006.

Click here to read the full article about which artist were omitted from the voters consideration.

Retro Music Snob News: 40th Anniversary "Summer of Love Concerts" In SF.

Harp Reports:

Non-profit organization The Council of Light will be holding a launch party on Feb. 14th for their forthcoming 40th Anniversary Summer of Love concerts in San Francisco and London. The party will feature Doc Kraft (his website describes his band’s range from “quiet ‘Cocktail and Dinner Jazz’ to raucous ‘Rock'n Roadhouse’ music”) and live soundboard concert recordings from—appropriately enough—Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead.

The Council of Light includes members of the original Family Dog, original Grateful Dead management, FM programmers, and many of the poster artists from the ‘60s. Former Family Dog partner Boots Hughston is the event coordinator, while former Grateful Dead manager Rock Scully and David Bean (ex-president of CTI Records and manager for Jesse Colin Young) are organizing bands, licenses and sponsors. In a statement, the promoters indicated their intentions “to utilize the best in concert production for the musicians involved, from sound, to stage, to travel and lodging. While noted musicians from the era will be featured, organizers welcome bands from the past four decades inspired by the San Francisco music scene of the ‘60s. It is anticipated that there will be worldwide media coverage with live broadcast and streaming possibilities.”
The San Francisco show will be held at Speedway Meadows, Golden Gate Park on September 2, 2007. More information on the event including participating bands, will be announced at a later date. For now, visit
the Summer of Love 40th website to pique your interest.

Retro Music Snob News: Nick Cave Working On New Bad Seeds Album In Addition to Grinderman.

Billboard Reports:

Nick Cave will be a busy man in the coming months, as he prepares to release the self-titled debut from his band Grinderman and gets to work on the next release from his long-running outfit the Bad Seeds. First up is the Grinderman disc, due April 10 via Anti-, which finds Cave backed by Bad Seeds members Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos.

"Grinderman is low on personnel, the songs are short, the album is short," Cave tells Billboard.com. "And, I play guitar." The group will make its live debut in late April at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in England, but has yet to commit to additional performances. "If we can do [that show] with a minimum of fuss, then there's no reason we couldn't book dates," Cave says. "But to go on some huge tour would probably defeat the purpose of it in some way."

Retro Music Snob News: Dream Theater Signs To Roadrunner Records.

IGN Reports:

Roadrunner Records seems to be on a roll these days as they continue to sign deals with bands. The label most recently signed indie darlings De Novo Dahl.

Now comes the news that PoMo Proggers Dream Theater--Mike Portnoy, drums; John Petrucci, guitar; John Myung, bass; James LaBrie, vocals; Jordan Rudess, keyboards--have inked a deal with the label.

As part of the deal Dream Theater will release a new album, entitled Systematic Chaos, in June. They will also hit the road for a slew of live dates and festival appearances.

"This album's got all of the elements we've become known for," reveals Portnoy. "The focus on musicianship, the skull-crushing riffs, the big progressive epics and the heart-wrenching melodies. We've got one of the strongest and most devoted fan bases in the world, and they should certainly be happy with the new material. By working closely with the label we hope to turn a great many new heads, too.

"The band holed up at Avatar Studios in New York where they worked on the album with engineer/ mixer Paul Northfield (Rush, Queensrÿche, Porcupine Tree) and Portnoy and Petrucci co-producing the seven song effort, with one of the tracks rumored to be a 25-minute mini-epic.

Retro Music Snob News: LCD Soundsytems' James Murphy Dishes On Personal Info.

Guardian Unlimited and LHB Report:

Oh brother, where art thou? I'm at the Great Eastern Hotel near Shoreditch, the place where everyone looks like a bass player. I don't know the area that well but I love a good curry.

Where's your head at? It's in super happy excited zone.

Why? It's actually because, and this sounds so lame, but we just finished shooting videos, which I normally hate. I find it a necessary evil at best. I've just made a space video and spent all the budget on renting a huge loft and building space sets and flying harnesses and stuff. So I can make the crappest 2001 movie ever. The rough edit is totally amazing and hilarious.

Retro Music Snob News: Foo Fighter's Dave Grohl...No He Is Not Dead.

PR Reports:

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl was left shocked earlier this week, when he was listed online as having passed away. The incident marks the second time Grohl has been pronounced dead by internet pranksters.

Grohl’s details on online encyclopedia Wikipedia were altered to read "David Eric Grohl (January 14 1969 - February 5 2007)".

The rocker found out about his supposed demise when worried friends began calling offer his wife Jordyn their sympathy.

He says, "I got a phone message from a friend saying ‘Er, I guess…Jordyn… this is maybe… for you. I’m so sorry to hear what happened.’ "I heard this message and went, ‘What the f**k?’ They were leaving a message on my cell phone saying ‘I’m sorry Dave died.’ "That was weird, but I guess I’ve finally graduated to that status of being an internet rumour. It weirded me out a bit, but it’s stupid. I’m like a cockroach, don’t worry, I’ll be around for a long time."

Grohl was previously announced as dead in May 2006. Other rock stars to have had their deaths prematurely announced include Sir Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Paul Weller.

Song You Should Discover or Revisit
Fantastic clip! Off of 1980's "Boy" album. Wouldn't it be nice if radio played this song instead of the beaten down U2 songs they ram down your throat?

Retro Music Snob News: Yo La Tengo Talks About The Band's Expanding Sound.

Daily Yomiyuri Online and LHB Report:

With nearly 300 recorded songs and 22 years under its collective belt, Yo La Tengo continues to awe critics and fans alike with each new album. But the real treat begins when their amps warm up and the houselights dim.

Their performances run the gamut from high-decibel guitar wailings that would leave Sonic Youth speechless, to songs so quiet and gentle you want to nudge the guy next to you for being too loud when he takes a sip of beer.

The three-piece has recently been compared to jazz musicians for their lack of inhibition about improvising through entire sets--including one played recently in Jacksonville, Fla., with personal heroes the Sun Ra Arkestra--and have been lauded for their "encyclopedic knowledge of pop music." But singer/guitarist Ira Kaplan plays down the hype.

"We make millions of mistakes when we're playing, but you just learn that they don't matter that much. It's gone, you've made a mistake and it's over," Kaplan says from his tour bus somewhere on the road in the American South, chalking up the band's live successes to the willingness "to play badly in the pursuit of playing well."

Retro Music Snob News: Johnny Rotten To Judge Bodog $1 Million Dollar "Batttle of The Bands"

Casino Times Co. UK Report:

Bodog Music's $1 Million Battle of the Bands is pleased to announce that the legendary John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten) has signed on to be a judge for the show that is currently shooting across the United States and will run on a top cable network later in the year.

"I don't like decaffeinated teabags. The offer to this show came in the season to be jolly (Xmas). I don't know who Bodog is. I still don't, but I may in the future. I admire the wit, audacity and touch of genius to entrust me with the future of rock and roll. I do not do judgment. I don't take judgment. But, by the end of this show you'll know what this judge meant. I don't like decaffeinated teabags. P.S. - I always loved live music and these bands genuinely enjoy what they do, and they write their own songs. Thank you. Fresh. Whoever wins Bodog's cash cow contract is well worth it cause every single band in here is worth it. Words not given lightly. Up yours, John Rotten".

Retro Music Snob News: Cowboy Junkies New Album & Book Coming Soon.

Chartattack Reports:

The Cowboy Junkies have completed recording their new 11-track At The End Of Paths Taken album, which will be available in North America on April 17 and internationally a week earlier.

"I rarely sit down with the objective of writing a set of songs based on a single theme, but this time I set out to write an album that dealt with 'family' and all of its complex relationships," Michael Timmins says of the follow-up to 2005's Early 21st Century Blues. "I'm not sure if it's my age or the age we live in or both, but the songs began to hint at themes of inevitability and finality; not exactly pre-determination, but a sense of running out of choices, a sense of being at the end of paths taken."

Retro Music Snob News: Origin Of The Indie Music "PLUG" Awards.

NY Sun Reports:

Award ceremonies are doubleedged swords. Take the Academy Awards, which dutifully reward those working behind the scenes — be they producers, set decorators, or sound editors — as well as the stars out front. Of course, Oscar night makes an even bigger spectacle out of patting its own back and reveling in its selfimportance, not to mention correcting its past mistakes.

But at least the Oscars recognize foreign contributions, short films, and independent features. Music award ceremonies, be they the American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, or the Grammys, shine their spotlight exclusively on major label product and rarely on foreign shores. It was one year while watching the inanity that the lead editor of independent music bellwether, the College Music Journal (CMJ), Gerry Hart, and a few of his friends had a revelation.

"Kid Rock was at all of them! And it just struck us like ‘This is crazy!'" he said. After an extensive armchair discussion, Mr. Hart and a clutch of friends — "people running college radio shows, buyers at indie record stores … none of us very important" — decided to do their own awards ceremony, heralding albums they liked, basically to "create a big mixtape for the year."

Retro Music Snob News: Sammy Hagar Part Of Bands & Cruise Ship Vacations.

Billboard Reports:

Be it on land or sea, if there's one thing Sammy Hagar loves more than shooting tequila and playing rock 'n' roll, it's throwing an unforgettable party for his most dedicated fans.

Indeed, after nearly a week of getting "drunk off their asses" during the second annual Are We Having Any Fun Yet? cruise this March, about 750 loyal Hagar supporters will stumble off the Carnival Pride ship to meet the Red Rocker at the dock in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. From there, the next stop is Hagar's Cabo Wabo Cantina for afternoon tequila shots and an exclusive concert from the singer/liquor entrepreneur and his band the Wabos.

"We march (the fans) to the Cabo Wabo through town," Hagar says. "It's kind of like a parade. A couple of thousand locals join in and everybody is singing songs like 'Cabo Wabo' and 'Mas Tequila' -- it's awesome."

Along with such acts as Lynyrd Skynyrd (Gimme 3 Days), Tim McGraw (Country Cruise Getaway), Sister Hazel (the Rock Boat) and Barenaked Ladies (Ships and Dip), Hagar is one of many acts this year linking with a major cruise line to earn extra cash while taking a break from the road.

Retro Music Snob News: Andy Partridge At A Crossroad With XTC, and What Comes Next.

Pitchfork Reports:

Following the release of the Fuzzy Warbles Collector's Album box set, Andy Partridge is keeping busy, though the possibility of him releasing new music under the XTC moniker seems doubtful.

Partridge revealed the news to David Garland of WNYC's "Spinning on Air" for an episode of the radio show that will air this Sunday night, February 11, and Garland was nice enough to share a transcript of a piece of the interview with us. Partridge says, "At the moment, XTC is well and truly in the fridge. Purely, really, for the reason that [partner] Colin [Moulding] doesn't want to write anymore. He's either taking a break, or that break could become permanently in place. He told me some months back that he's not interested in music anymore, and doesn't want to write, and basically said, 'Our paths will cross again or they'll be involved in some way.' And then he proceeded to move away from his house-- I have no idea where he's living right now, I have no idea what his phone number is, don't really know how to contact him, and so Colin is obviously wanting to leave the world to some extent. And I guess he's got the right to do that, so I'm not going to pester him and say, 'Come on, what's the matter with you, get it together

Retro Music Snob News: Fountains of Wayne Stream "Someone To Love" Off of Traffic and Weather.

Stereogum Reports:

Power pop gurus Fountains Of Wayne are blazing back this year with their fourth LP Traffic And Weather, and between their eponymous debut and Welcome Interstate Managers, they've got a lot to live up to. Good thing they're bloody brilliant! The record's chugging title track's a dirty burner, "Michael And Heather At The Baggage Claim" is a breezy bit of acoustic pop, "Yolanda Hayes" is an pepped-up dose of horn-blasted '60s songwriting, and "This Better Be Good" has the heartbroken-harmonies-and-glockenspiel vibe on lockdown. So yeah, we like it -- but we're fanboys. Here's a stream of the first single, "Someone To Love," a slice of classic FOW, slinging power chords, synth arpeggios, and a beefy hook.

Retro Music Snob News: Ryan Adams Wants To Max Out His Output On His Internet Site.

Spin Reports:

If you put a nickel in the bank every time the word prolific appeared in print before Ryan Adams' name, you'll have saved enough by next year to buy a Ferrari Enzo that's been dipped in beluga caviar and bedazzled with pink sapphires. And if Adams released all the songs he'd written while your funds accrued, making them available for 99 cents each, you still wouldn't have enough money to download them all.

Now, there are probably many complex reasons why Adams -- who put out no fewer than three albums in 2005, including the stellar jam-bandy double disc Cold Roses -- releases so much work. I won't pretend to psychoanalyze his motives, though I believe the simple answer he gave on his website: "I like to play music when I'm not busy playing music." But last December, when he posted 13 very funny novelty albums on his homepage -- attributed to such alter egos as chill rapper DJ Reggie, screamo outfit WereWolph, and bratty punkers the Shit -- I wondered if the move was a direct response to folks who'd complained about his unpruned output on Stereogum a few months earlier. "I have learned how to use a cool thing on my computer which basically allows me now to never ever stop recording music ever," Adams wrote on ryan-adams.com, "Which is going to be great news for all my adoring fans." To wit: You think I've recorded too much? Wait until you hear my 113,236,857th record, an ode to every idea I've had since lunch.

Retro Music Snob News: Arcade Fire Add Electrelane And Patrick Wolf To Tour.

Pitchfork Reports:

Before overseas fans of Arcade Fire reach "The Well and the Lighthouse", they'll explore The Magic Position. Before "No Cars Go"? No Shouts, No Calls. That's right, the indomitable Arcade Fire have asked Patrick Wolf and Electrelane to each open a leg of their previously reported European mega-tour.

Wolf-- whose The Magic Position drops UK-ways on February 26 (Loog) and U.S.-ways May 1 (Low Altitude/Universal), as you know-- joins the little indie band that could for eight dates, beginning March 5 in Dublin. He'll then pass the torch to Electrelane, who'll attempt to whip crowds into a frenzy of neon Biblical proportions over the next 14 dates, including a long European stretch. As reported yesterday, Electrelane's No Shouts, No Calls hits U.S. shores May 8 via Too Pure.

We imagine all these gigs have sold themselves inside out by now, so we encourage the woefully ticketless to seek consolation by revisiting the lyrics, the mysterious pamphlet, NPR (for the February 17 concert simulcast), and that other Bible.

Retro Music Snob News: Hoodoo Gurus Back In The US. Check Dates.

Live Daily Reports:

Veteran Australian pop-punk rockers the Hoodoo Gurus have a North American tour planned for next month--their first shows in the US since 1994.

The band, which had several hits on the US college charts in the mid to late '80s, will start with three March 16 performances at South by Southwest in Austin. From there, the group will hit New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado, California and Toronto, Ontario, through March 31. Dates are listed below.

As part of their recent label deal with Virtual Records, the Gurus have reissued their debut recording, 1984's "Stoneage Romeos," and put out a two-disc DVD collection titled "Tunnel Vision."

The "Stoneage Romeos" reissue includes bonus tracks "Leilani Pt 2," "Be My Guru" and "Hoodoo You Love," along with a fold-out poster. A couple of songs from the record are streaming at the band's MySpace page.
The "Tunnel Vision" DVD features all of Hoodoo Gurus' 30 videos, plus live performances filmed in venues around the world and a full-length documentary with band interviews and special guests including Red Kross and The Bangles, according to a press release.

The deal with Virtual, which gives the band its own Hoodoo Gurus Records label, also provides for the digital release of tracks from the Gurus' catalog that have not previously been available in North America, according to the band's website.

Retro Music Snob News: Guns N' Roses Honor Versace With Performance At Rodeo Drive's "Walk Of Style". See Pictures.

Blabbermouth Reports:

Guns N' Roses played a two-song set at the Rodeo Drive's Walk of Style ceremony, which was held Thursday night (February 8) in Beverly Hills, California. The band, which used a stand-in bass player (Tommy Stinson was apparently unable to make the gig) for the performance, blazed through "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and "Sweet Child O' Mine" to close the event, which honored Gianni and Donatella Versace.

The news of GN'R's performance was broken Tuesday (February 6) during Donatella Versace's appearance on the "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" program where she called GN'R frontman Axl Rose a "very elegant person" who loves fashion. Axl reportedly stayed after the band's set until the party ended shortly after midnight. Former SKID ROW frontman Sebastian Bach was one of Rose's guests for the evening. Retro Music Snob Video: The Police "Truth Hits Everybody"

Song You Should Discover or Re-Visit
The Police will open the Grammys on Sunday...the chat on the blogs have been about what song do you think they should open with, and what song will they open with. Check Stereogum as they placed odds on what the first song will be. Pretty funny. For once it would be cool if a reunited band would open with a tune that hasn't been driven in the ground (ie...Roxanne and Every Breath). My opening medley suggestion "Truth Hits Everybody" or "Next To You", "Message in a Bottle", "Man in a Suitcase". If I had to lay money on what they will open the Grammys with...I would go with "Message in a Bottle"...

Retro Music Snob News: 15 Songs Owned By Movie Scenes

AV Club Reports:
"The Snob" digz lists, and this is a short, but relatively good one. Gret topic for debate. Of course there are so many scenes tied to tunes that it would take some serious thinking to narrow it down to the best of the best. We will have to expand on this list someday...when time permits. Send me your top 10, and I will start compiling them.

1. Stealers Wheel, "Stuck In The Middle With You," Reservoir Dogs (1992)
In liner notes penned for a double-disc edition of the Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction soundtracks, Quentin Tarantino introduced the notion that sometimes songs become so linked to films that the films essentially own them from there on out. So it's only fitting to begin this list with the perfect example: Prior to Tarantino's 1992 debut film, it was a pleasant bit of Beatles-inspired '70s pop. Now it's the sound of bondage and mutilation and there's no going back.

2. Derek And The Dominos, "Layla," Goodfellas (1990)
From as early as Who's That Knocking At My Door? and Mean Streets, director Martin Scorsese has been a great innovator in using pop music in films—sometimes in an ironic context, other times to bring a certain period or emotion to life. The piano coda to Derek And The Dominos' "Layla" comes at a time of reckoning in Goodfellas: The audacious Lufthansa heist, such a boon to the gangsters who pulled it off, has completely unraveled because the people involved have spent their money conspicuously. As a boy heads off to retrieve a stickball, he discovers the first bodies in a pink Cadillac, and the song starts to play as more bodies are discovered in a pile of garbage and a meat truck. It's the morning Joe Pesci becomes a made man, and the mood is ominous.

Retro Music Snob News: The Exies Freddy Herrera Does A Little Q&A

IGN Reports:

Angeles based power pop trio The Exies (Scott Stevens, lead vocals, guitar; Freddy Herrera, bass, vocals; Chris Skane, guitar, vocals) sprung up on the scene back in 1998, founded by Stevens and Herrera.

The band has released two albums to date, Inertia in 2003 and Head For The Door in 2004. Their third release, A Modern Way Of Living With The Truth, is scheduled to hit on April 10th, 2007.

While the writing and recording of the new album kept the band busy, they also spruce up the studio seclusion with bristling live shows and to date have toured extensively with the likes of Breaking Benjamin, 30 Seconds To Mars, The Used, Sparta, Evanescence, and even found themselves on the Motley Crue Carnival of Sins Tour in 2006 due to the fact that Nikki Sixx is a huge fan.

Interestingly enough the band was close to the edge of breaking up, but found a new sense of purpose with the new album.Recently we caught up with bassist and vocalist Freddy Herrera who valiantly answered all the questions we shotgunned his way.

Retro Music Snob News: Fall Out Boy Feel Comments Unwarranted Due To Hip Hop Connection.

MTV Reports:

Speaking in an exclusive interview with MTV News, the Fall Out crew, who have recently been spotted hanging out with the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye as well as collaborating with hip-hop artists on new tracks, said that people should just take their music for what it is. “It is almost painful,” said Pete, “to watch people be like ‘Oh it is so different and this is insane’ and reviewers or the press get the one sheet on it. ‘Oh yeah they worked with (whispers) black people!’ and they are like ‘Its rap, it is actually a rap record.”

“It is real disheartening because you feel like people know how they feel about the record before they even listen to it.”

Vocalist Patrick Stump added that even if they experiment with different sounds and work with different people they are still the Fall Out Boy that fans know and love. “It’s one of those things where you cannot escape yourself,” he said, “and no matter what we do we are still going to be Fall Out Boy. And the key is that we are proud of that.”

Retro Music Snob News: Foo Fighters Taylor Hawkins Reacts To Prince Cover At The Superbowl.

NME Reports:

Foo Fighters have reacted to Prince's cover of 'Best Of You' at the Superbowl XL halftime show on Sunday (February 4).

The Foo Fighters have covered the Prince song 'Darling Nikki' and the Prince penned 'Drive Me Wild' as b-sides.

Drummer Taylor Hawkins said: "Dude, I have no idea why he did it, but I'd love to find out. I mean, the thought went through my head that maybe he was doing it as a sort of 'Fuck you' to us, or maybe he really likes the song.

"Either way, it was pretty amazing to have a guy like Prince covering one of our songs - and actually doing it better than we did.

"Speaking about Prince's reaction to the Foo's cover 'Darling Nikki' he said: "We wanted to put it out here in the States, but Prince wouldn't let us. I heard that he didn't like our version. Or maybe he didn't like us doing it."

"Dave (Grohl loved 'Darling Nikki' because it was really funky. And so we just recorded our version in my garage, and somehow it ended up getting played on the radio- which was weird, because we just did it as a sort of joke."

Hawkins said that the band were beginning to work on the follow up to 2005's 'In Your Honour', he told MTV: "We're just getting started on a new album, just demoing and stuff right now."

Retro Music Snob News: Feist New Album Info. Release Dates & Track List.

Chartattack Reports:

It's been a year since the release of Feist's Open Season remix album, and three since her Let It Die breakthrough, so she may have had a few reminders that she was overdue for some new material.

The Calgary native seems to have taken those hints to heart, and Arts & Crafts will release The Reminder on May 1. Feist told ChartAttack at last year's Juno Awards that her new album would feature more guitar and contributions from Mocky, Chilli Gonzales, Jamie Lidell and her Canadian band members, Bryden Baird, Jesse Baird and Julian Brown. What appears to be the new record's cover, but no other information, can be found on Feist's website.

If you're really desperate to hear The Reminder and don't mind forking out extra cash for an import copy, it will come out internationally a week before hitting stores in Canada and the U.S.
Feist has been
nominated for favourite solo artist at this year's Canadian Independent Music Awards, which take place at Toronto's Docks on March 7.

The part-time Broken Social Scene member has five shows scheduled in England, France and Germany in April, and Canadian dates in support of The Reminder are expected later this year.

Here are the songs on The Reminder:
"So Sorry"
"I Feel It All"
"My Moon My Man"
"The Park"
"The Water"
"Sea Lion Woman"
"Past In Present"
"Limit To Your Love"
"1 2 3 4"
"Brandy Alexander"
"Intuition"
"Honey Honey"

Retro Music Snob News: ITunes Partners With Ticketmaster.

Filter Reports:

At the Concert Industry Consortium 2007 held earlier this week in Los Angeles, Sean Moriarty, the head of Ticketmaster, announced that the company will allow users to purchase concert tickets and iTunes downloads simultaneously. This is not the first time that music downloads have been offered alongside concert tickets. For the release of Modern Times in August, Bob Dylan offered exclusive ticket purchases to iTunes customers who downloaded the album.

In lieu of the summer concert season, Ticketmaster has decided to allow ticket purchasers the opportunity to download music of their choice from the iTunes Store for free. In addition to the free downloads, Ticketmaster and iTunes are going to jointly sell $50 gift cards. Talks of the collaboration are currently in its initial phase. More ideas will be announced following a test run during the summer concert season.

Retro Music Snob News: Bloc Party Comment On Album Leaks.

NME Reports:

Bloc Party's Kele Okereke has spoken about their second album 'A Weekend In The City' leaking on the internet three months ahead of its release date.

A low quality rip of the entire album leaked onto the internet in November 2006, while a high quality version of the album leaked in January of this year.

Speaking about the leak, frontman Kele Okereke said: "We were worried how that would affect things, but it's number one in the midweek charts.

"One benefit of the album leaking on to the net is that a lot of people have already heard some of the tracks, so they react in the right places and the shows have been amazing so far.

"Okereke said despite the growth the band have experienced between albums he is still fond of their debut 'Silent Alarm'.

He said: "I am proud. You always cringe at your earlier efforts. I will probably do the same with our latest album. But I know both are good records.

"Okereke also explained the lyrics in album opener 'Song From Clay (Disappear Here)'. He told Something For The Weekend: "I wanted to write about this detached socialite character, who goes to all the right parties and who knows all the right people but feels unfulfilled.

"There's nothing more depressing than someone who has been out too long and can't function or think. It can be quite dehumanising."

Retro Music Snob News: Noel Gallagher Brands His Brother Liam a Lunatic. That Is Classic Brotherly Love.

PR Reports:

Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher has branded his bandmate brother Liam a 'lunatic', insisting he is too easily led to be taken seriously. Noel, 39, is convinced his younger sibling still has the personality of a very young man, despite being 34 years old - and he regularly exploits Liam with his superior intellect. He says, "Liam has really long hair at the moment and looks like a lunatic, which is about right. "He's still a very silly young man and talks out of his a**e 23 hours of the day. "You say, 'Hey Liam, what about putting a choir on that song?' He'll say, 'Brilliant, yeah, f**king choir, man.' "Then someone will go, 'Choir? That's a bit poncey isn't it?' And he'll be like, 'Yeah, no, choirs are s**t, mate, f**king rubbish.' So you can have good fun with Liam in the studio!"

Retro Music Snob News: Goon Moon Reunites Twiggy Ramirez and Masters Of Reality Chris Goss.

Billboard Reports:
Jeordie White (better known to Marilyn Manson fans as Twiggy Ramirez) has united once more with Masters Of Reality singer/guitarist Chris Goss and Hella drummer Zach Hill for the second release by Goon Moon, "Licker's Last Leg." Due April 28 via Ipecac, the disc isn't quite as strange as 2005's "I Got a Brand New Egg Layin' Machine," but is certainly still quirky enough to be unmistakably Goon Moon.
Most of the tracks from the new effort came from the same session as the debut. "Some of the music that was recorded on 'Licker's Last Legs' was recorded before the debut, but then the vocals were just put on a few months ago," White tells Billboard.com. "We'd revisit it over a period of time, which was cool, because then it changes with the styles. If you record something years ago, you're influenced by a lot of stuff that's going on, then you revisit it."

Retro Music Snob News: The Who Are Upset That New Songs From Older Bands Rarely Played On Today's Radio.

PR Reports:

Veteran British band The Who have blasted radio stations for failing to give airplay to older bands who are still writing new material. The My Generation hitmakers, who are set to rock Europe in May and June (07) when they hit the road for 28 concerts, are seething at the lack of respect from British radio stations - insisting they deserve better. Frontman Roger Daltrey says, "It’s very hard for bands in our position to get airplay these days. That’s a fact."Very few DJs these days love music. They’re just personality. Retro Music Snob News: EMI In Talks To Sell Unprotected Catalog Mp3's.

Yahoo Music Reports:

Music company EMI Group PLC — home of The Rolling Stones and Coldplay — has been talking with online retailers about possibly selling its entire digital music catalog in MP3 format without copy protection, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing numerous people familiar with the matter.

The MP3 format, which can be freely copied and played on virtually any device, would allow consumers to play music purchased from any online store on any digital music device.

Currently, music purchased at Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store, for example, is wrapped in Apple's proprietary version of Digital Rights Management technology known as "FairPlay" and can only be played on the company's iPod devices. Songs purchased from rival online stores that carry different DRM technology cannot be played on iPods. That has caused some to wonder whether it might be hampering sales.

According to the people familiar with the matter, London-based EMI asked the retailers to submit proposals by Thursday telling the company what size advance payments they would offer in exchange for the right to sell EMI's music as MP3s, the Journal reported.

One of the unidentified people said EMI would decide whether to forge ahead with the strategy based on the size of the offers. A decision about whether to keep pursuing the idea could come as soon as Friday, the Journal said.

Retro Music Snob News: Wolfmother Strive To Be Heavier On Second Album.

NME Reports:

Wolfmother have shed light on the writing of their second album. The Australian rockers are anxious to make the record heavier than their debut, 2005's 'Wolfmother'. Speaking to NME.COM, singer and guitarist Andrew Stockdale said: "Songs like 'Joker & The Thief' and 'Woman' were just relentless and totally in your face. I feel like there's an element of that in the new songs."A lot of bands that I've heard, after the first record they kind of soften up, but I definitely don't want to get softer on the second record. I want it to be to the point."The band refused to speculate on when recording would take place or when the album would be released.Stockdale said: "It's not really clear what's going on or when we're gonna record or when it's gonna come out. All I can say is that the ideas we've played around with in the studio I'm very happy with. I feel good about the second record."

Retro Music Snob News: Paolo Nutini Turns Down Controversial Grant Money For SXSW Travels.

PR Reports:

Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini has turned down a grant of £3,000 ($5,7000) of British taxpayers’ money, after coming under a barrage of criticism from fellow musicians.

The Last Request hitmaker applied for the grant to cover his travel costs to the South By Southwest festival in Texas next month (APR07) - but has come under fire from other groups who insist he is more than capable of financing himself.

Nutini’s management made the grant request last year (06), before his debut album These Streets was released - it went on to sell more than 600,000 copies in the UK.

A Scottish Arts Council spokeswoman says: "While Paolo Nutini was eligible for support, we welcome his management’s decision to withdraw their funding request. "This means the money can now be invested in emerging Scottish bands. Paolo’s career is blossoming in the UK but the US market is notoriously difficult to break." The Scottish Arts Council will hand grants to 10 Scottish bands attending South By Southwest in Austin.

Retro Music Snob News: Al Green's New Album Will Be Produced By ?uestlove From The Roots.

Billboard Reports:

Al Green is at work on his next Blue Note studio album with the Roots' Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson in the producer's chair. The as-yet-untitled disc has been in the works for two years already, but Thompson tells Billboard.com he is hoping to finish it up in September.

The pairing came to fruition after Thompson "ran my big mouth" and told [Blue Note senior director of A&R] Eli [Wolf], "'Yo, man. You want a real Al Green record? Come see me.' So now I've got to live up to that.

"Thompson admits he has a very specific sound in mind for the follow-up to Green's 2005 album "Everything's O.K.," and that he has met with some resistance about seeing it through. "If it were up to me and it was absolutely totalitarianism, I would live all my derivative fantasies out on this record," he says. "It would be 1974 all over again, sonically. I think they're still getting used to that.

"One of the difficulties, according to Thompson, is that veteran artists see their peers reaping commercial rewards by pairing with young, hot talent and have trouble resisting the urge to jump on that bandwagon."If you're going to compete with T.I., Chamillionaire and Jay-Z, then by all means, let's try and reach the kids of today," he says.

"But if you put the dart in your hand and you're not going to hit a bullseye, you're better off just doing what you know best."

Retro Music Snob News: Check North Dakota's Ballet Out.. "Mozart to Metallica".

KFYR-TV and Blabbermouth Reports:

North Dakota's KFYR-TV reports that the upcoming ballet "Mozart to Metallica" will showcase several choreographers using dancers from the Northern Plains Ballet, but the poster to promote the show is raising some eyebrows.

The dancers conducted an open rehearsal this afternoon for the public to see what the upcoming ballet is all about, and executive director Becky Bowen says there are businesses in town that won't use the poster to promote the event because the image is too risque. Bowen says the ballerina and motorcycle simply reflect the distinct styles of art in North Dakota. "To show really the diversity of art in our own state.

We have people that are really inspired by the classical, which is represented by the ballerina in the red tutu and then we have people that really get down to heavy metal like METALLICA," says Bowen. "Mozart to Metallica" will be at the Belle Mehus February 17-18. The ballet combines the classical with the contemporary, something for everyone to enjoy.
